The Best Basketball Movie Of The Year / May 19, 2008 / 10:00 am

(L-R) Director Adam Yauch, Tyreke Evans, Michael Beasley, Bobbito a.k.a. Kool Bob Love, and Lance “Born Ready” Stephenson on stage at the Gunnin’ world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.

Okay, so maybe I’m a bit biased as I play role in the film, but word to Mutombo & Muresan I can’t see any other basketball film coming out this year that will compete with Gunnin’ For That #1 Spot. The Oscilloscope Films’ documentary, directed by Beastie Boy artist Adam Yauch, captured the 2006 Elite 24 HS All-American Classic, a brainchild of Kris Stone. The contest had plenty firsts. No other game of its kind had ever featured players regardless of school year or sneaker affiliation, or had been played outdoors. It was a personal first for me, too. I had never announced a game at Rucker Park, and went bonkeraroonie on the mic! It was all taped and presented in this flick for your giggling pleasure.

Gunnin’ not only documented the Elite 24, but went in depth into Rucker’s history, as well as providing profiles of players Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, Brandon Jennings, Lance Stephenson, Jarryd Bayless, Donte Green, Kyle Singler, and Tyreke Evans. It may not have the drama of Hoop Dreams (still the greatest b-ball doc ever), however Yauch’s crafty camera angles and music scoring will make any viewer hold both films in the same esteem.

This joint is a winner. Dead up. It comes out in theaters right after the NBA Draft on June 27th. Good timing as Love and Beasley will be prominent amongst the Lottery picks. We’ll get you more info soon, but in the meantime you can peep: Gunnin’

Yeah Bobbito I was at the film festival and this is one of the best basketball movie I seen in a long time. You did a good job on the mic, keep doing what u do. Its great for the film to feature the top high school ball players and more in important the Rucker family from the grandson of Mr. Holcombe Rucker himself. Featuring the brand what Chris Rucker and Dexter Gordon keeping that legacy. Well good luck to all the athletes that was featured in the film on their careers in the game.
